14th Amendment - thereof

The 14th amendment Section 1 “All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.” (1)
I cannot help but think as I read the U.S Constitution (I try to do that once a week now) about how brilliant our forefathers were it is amazing to read their and how careful they framed the documents we use today to govern our nation.

As I examine the language of the 14th amendment one of the tricky words. The definition of thereof is;
1. of that or it.
2. from or out of that origin or cause. (2)

The word thereof is an adverb. An adverb indicates manner, time, place, cause, or degree and answers questions such as "how," "when," "where," "how much”. (3)
Thereof indicates the manner of time, cause or degree of jurisdiction. If someone is illegal then there is no jurisdiction and if it is an infant then the government is going to take over caring for and raising the babies of illegal immigrants? I am putting thereof with the phase subject to the jurisdiction because of the comma signifying a break in the sentence. Thereof could mean looking at the whole phase and “subject to the jurisdiction thereof,” people who do not abide by the laws of the nation would not be “subject to the jurisdiction thereof” There is no cause or degree when you are not a part of the laws of the nation, unless they have come across our borders following the procedures of applying to become part of the United States of America thereof. The framers had it right you need to belong, invest your time (and now because of taxation your money) because if you become part of this great nation there is a sense of pride, dedication and patriotism.


The women who come across the borders to have their babies no that the United States will support their children. I believe there needs to be a way of monitoring this since a great number of illegal immigrants mothers give birth in the United States. "An estimated 340,000 of the 4.3 million babies born in the United States in 2008 were the offspring of unauthorized immigrants, according to a new analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data by the Pew Hispanic Center, a project of the Pew Research Center.

Unauthorized immigrants comprise slightly more than 4% of the adult population of the U.S., but because they are relatively young and have high birthrates, their children make up a much larger share of both the newborn population (8%) and the child population (7% of those younger than age 18) in this country.

These figures are based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau's March 2009 Current Population Survey, augmented with the Pew Hispanic Center's analysis of the demographic characteristics of the unauthorized immigrant population using a "residual estimation methodology"..."(4) This is a problem and a cost to those who are US citizen or have chosen to come to this country legally.
