2nd posting - Flag Day
June 14th 2010 12:40
I know I posted about a bill that the Senate is debating but today is also Flag Day. One of our nations symbols that we forget to put out (some of you may not own a Flag), we do not tell a Veteran or current members of the military “Thank-you” for defending our country, protecting our rights and freedoms or know nothing about the history of our flag. Such as when was the current flag last updated and for what reason? How many stripes are there and what do they represent? So here is some information about Flag Day
The flag was first approved on June 14, 1777 by the first Continental Congress. Now we all should know that Betsy Ross is credited for sewing the first flag, however is that a true story or legend?
In 1916 President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation establishing June 14, (the day that the flag was approved by our forefathers, the members of the Continental Congress). It was by Congressional legislation signed by President Harry Truman (1949) authorized June 14 the as the national Flag Day.
As of this writing there have been twenty-seven official adaptations of the flag. The star in various arrangements was made a number of the flag different. In 1912 President Taft declared that the flag was to have forty-eight stars placed on six rows of eight stars in each row. The flag changed again in 1959-60 when Alaska became a state and the latest version of fifty stars with 13 white and red stripes after Hawaii became the fiftieth state.
