Really Long Link Now forgive me if I am wrong but every stimulus package has had road/highway and bridge repair in them – how is that working out so far. Every major highway in the Northeast is dug up and torn up with workers working day and night. Not many jobs being created and that type of work are only done in the warmer weather so much of the country will not see jobs until next spring. Also aren’t the states and local government responsible for most of the roads? So is this another industry that this administration wants to take over?
Are any of you aware of “The Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956, popularly known as the National Interstate and Defense Highways Act (Public Law 84-627), was enacted on June 29, 1956, when Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the bill into law. With an original authorization of 25 billion dollars for the construction of 41,000 miles (66,000 km) of the Interstate Highway System supposedly over a 20-year period, it was the largest public works project in American history through that time.[citation needed]
The money for the Interstate Highway and Defense Highways was handled in a highway trust fund that paid for 90 percent of highway construction costs with the states required to pay the remaining 10 percent. It was expected that the money would be generated through new taxes on fuel, automobiles, trucks, and tires. As a matter of practice, the Federal portion of the cost of the Interstate Highway System has been paid for by taxes on gasoline and diesel fuel.
Many limited-access toll highways that had been built prior to the Interstate Highway Act were incorporated into the Interstate system (for example, the Ohio Turnpike carries portions of Interstates 76, 80, and 90). For major turnpikes in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, and West Virginia, tolls continue to be collected, even though the turnpikes have long since been paid for. The money collected is used for highway maintenance, turnpike improvement projects, and frankly to fund the states' general funds for any use whatsoever. In addition, there are quite a few major toll bridges and toll tunnels included in the Interstate Highways, including ones linking Delaware with New Jersey, New Jersey with New York, and New Jersey with Pennsylvania (Wilkipedia, 2010). So what are we paying for and or is the government going to set up toll roads in order to pay for these projects and yes make our commutes to work longer and more costly?
Unfortunately the way the jobless numbers are going and the economy I do not see much stimulating going on I see a lot of government spending because people are afraid to spend what they make in this uncertain market, do not know what the cost of healthcare will be and with the Bush tax cuts going away at the end of the year. This is no time to spend. Even my charitable donations are down and that saddens me because I give to good charities that use their money to help people not to pay and administrative staff but with gas prices on the rise, food costing more, student loans to pay back and utilities on the rise I cannot afford to be a generous.
